The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is considering the construction of a Metrorail heavy repair and overhaul facility in Landover, Maryland, and is seeking public comments on the proposal.

The facility would feature heavy repair and overhaul service bays to accommodate up to 40 rail cars; vehicle storage tracks to handle up to 24 rail cars; a traction power substation; and operations and administrative offices. The proposed shop would provide additional rail-car maintenance capacity, and accommodate an increase in demand for additional track maintenance and associated equipment, WMATA officials said in a press release.

The facility would connect to the Orange Line between Landover and New Carrollton, Maryland. The 37-acre site includes several properties with light industrial activities.

WMATA is accepting comments on the proposal online or in person by March 28. In addition, the agency will hold an open house March 18 in Landover to review the project.

Public feedback will be submitted to WMATA’s board in May. If the board approves the project, property acquisition would be necessary for the facility, WMATA officials said.
